Just thinking about the difference between faith and belief (not that there should be a firm line drawn between the two), but one of the core differences in our language is that belief simply denotes an intellectual acceptance of an idea. It does not denote an action that must be taken out of that belief. Tons of people believe smoking to be bad for them but continue to light up all day long. That’s because belief does not translate into your the behavior of your life consistently. Faith on the other hand includes belief in it’s system but adds an element of trust – Faith is so tightly wound with trust that when we ask someone if they have “faith in me”, we are asking them if they trust you – will rely on you…

I wonder how many times my life has been caught up in simple belief in the good news rather than faith in Jesus. I long to trust Him and let Him lead.

It seems like our lives are already busy, basketball practice to drop kids off at, games to go to, meetings for work that run late, Doctors appointments, homework, finals, and a million other things that occupy our attention. The problem is, if you are trying to follow Jesus but all of your time is consumed by other things – it’s easy to forget and leave behind God. This Christmas, that’s all changing!

Jenni and I are having a garage sale today and tomorrow (if you need any little boy clothes from newborn to 4T – don’t look anywhere else). Anyway, it makes me think of all the stuff in my life that is just junking it up and how badly I need a good spring (or fall) cleaning. Pastors have just as many issues as normal people, we are just good at hiding them! Hah. My hope is to not hide but to expose and to clean house. I want to know Christ better than I do, I want to get rid of my anger and hurtful attitudes. I want to really follow Jesus wholeheartedly.

PS – if you want to stop by and see Jenni and I we would love to have some visitors, here’s the directions to our house:

Go North on Andover Rd. just past 21st Street (Look for signs). There is a new housing addition called Cornerstone. You turn Left into this entrance (if you go past it you’ll be on your way into the country). Turn right when you see the model homes (They have white fence in front of them), stay on this road, it will wind and curve, it will eventually turn into Slate St. Our house is towards the end on the right (802 W. Slate, Andover, KS. 67002).

I was just spending some time praying today and really felt a strong compulsion to ask God to lead Epic. You see, I’m afraid that as a leader I can work on systems, creativity, relavancy, and so many other things and never let God lead. It is my hearts one desire that God would be the one who leads, that Christ would be the one who is glorified. That as leaders we would take on the humility and gentleness of Christ as we follow Him. It’s so easy to get this all switched around and miss the boat – so I’m going to do my best to keep my eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of my faith. How bout you?

I was thinking today about how unbelievable some of the miracles in the bible are. Whales eating a guy and spitting him back on shore, bodies of water splitting and the land drying up so that people could walk across it, and many more. At first I was thinking about how hard it is to believe those things.
Then I started to think about God and His nature. I started to think about the fact that if there is a God (which I believe all creation begs that question), then I would only expect grand expressions of His power in the universe. I would expect that He would be able to flood the earth & change water to wine. A God that is only capable of working within the natural laws as we know is not much of a God at all. If He is limited by time, space, gravity, thermodynamics – then how can He be God? It would seem to me that the audacious claim of a miracle lends credibility to the story rather than taking it away.
So, I do not believe in God because of the miracles – but I do believe in the miracles because I believe in God. My belief in God is based in historical evidence (read Josephus – look at the dead sea scrolls – search biblical archaeology), and personal experience (my encounter with Jesus has changed me more than any other event in my life) and the idea of miracles only makes more sense within the paradigm of a God who is infinite in resource and power!

I can’t tell you how nice it is to be in a house again! Jenni and I have been moving around for the last 2 years like vagabonds, living in small, cramped, dark places as we prepared to move to Andover to plant Epic. It has all been worth it, but now that we are in the house, it sure is nice!

I think the thing I like the most is that there is room, there is margin. Everything in the house is not right on top of you all the time. You can walk around without having to dodge boxes or tables! I love it!

I think margin is something we all need in our lives. We need it at work, at home, in our families, and in our relationship with God. Jesus practiced adding margin into his life, <a href="http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%201:35-39;&version=31;" 0="target="_new")">Mark 1:35-39 talks about Jesus going off early in the morning to pray. When his disciples finally catch up with Him, they want to push Him back into the busyness – they tell Him that “Everyone is looking for you.” I think Jesus has a classy response, “Let’s go somewhere else”! After spending time with God creating margin in His life, Jesus was able to see clearly His mission in the midst of the craziness of life.

There are lots of reasons why we struggle with following God and having a relationship with him – wrong attitudes, getting caught up in things that don’t matter, being rebellious, and the list goes on. I believe that most of this could be fixed if we would take our cue from Jesus and create margin. If we would get away from the constant influx of information and busyness and start to get off with God and ask Him the big questions, “Who are you?”, “What do you think of me?”, “Where do you want me spending my time, energy and money?”.

This practice alone could literally change every aspect of your life!

I was thinking about my poor baby Peter. He’s sick, and is having to take breathing treatments to help him breathe better. The thing that is really hard about this is that he doesn’t understand what’s going on. He pushes the apparatus away and doesn’t want anything over his face. I wish there was a way for me to help him understand, to explain it to him.

I sometimes think this is the reason Jesus came to the earth and put on the skin of a man. We were hurting and broken – separated from God and in need of some sort of ultimate treatment. So, in order to communicate the extent of Gods love for us, Jesus became a man, spoke our language, showed us how to live a life that was without wrongdoing and then applied the ultimate salve for our souls. His blood for ours. This is the essence of the gospel. That God, loved us so much that He sent His one and only son to die in our place – the righteous for the unrighteous.

That’s the power of the cross, that’s the good news that we proclaim. And that is why we are planting Epic Church – because our God went first and stepped out to build a relationship with us!

I have sleep apnea, but had no idea because, well, I was always asleep. I felt the effects of the apnea, tiredness and exceptional good looks, but never knew whether I had it. I needed someone outside of myself to observe it and figure out a plan of attack.

I think the same is true spiritually for many of us. I personally didn’t know exactly what I needed before I met Jesus, I just knew that on my own, I wasn’t really sufficient. Something was missing. I needed outside evaluation. When I met Jesus, He radically altered my life, all the baggage that I came to the table with, was all of the sudden meaningless.

That’s what I love the most about being a follower of Christ, I am made new every day!
