Why a New Church?:

The East Side of Wichita and Andover, KS, only have about 35% of the population attending church. We know there are some great churches in this area and we want to join in with them to try and make a difference in the Andover area. We don’t think a new church is the answer in and of itself, the answer is to help people who feel disconnected from God make bold moves to know Him. If this is you, we would love to talk with you!

Epic’s “In N’ Out” Philosophy:

At Epic Church we have a little different philosophy about what a church should be. We think there is more to following Jesus than just simply attending church sponsored events and activities and having your life be so filled with church that you don’t have time for anything else (see our “3+1 Ministries” section). Following Jesus should be integrated into every aspect of your life. We want you to come IN to our church and get involved with what God is doing through Epic Church. But, we don’t want you to stop there. We want to send you OUT into the community each week to live your life with your friends and neighbors in such a way that you earn the right to speak into their lives and eventually have the opportunity to offer them the hope of Jesus. We want you to be constantly adding to those around you, we call it your “+1″ ministry!

So, quick and dirty, we want to get you In, but just as quickly, we want to get you out – week in, and week out!

3+1 Ministries:

Another thing that makes Epic Church different from a lot of churches is our narrow focus on three ministries that are specifically for the church – Worship gatherings, stuff for kids, and small groups. We don’t have Sunday Schools, or concerts. We don’t do our own events or have a soccer ministry. We have 3 things we do for the church body, and our goal is to become the best in the world at those 3 things.

You’re thinking, “Ok, I get where the ‘3′ comes from, but what about the ‘+1′”, the “+1″ simply stands for service. We have 3 things we do as a church for the church – the last thing we do is for the community. This all goes back to our “In N’ Out” Philosophy. We don’t think Christ Followers can advance in their relationship with God if all they are ever doing is pouring into themselves. The church is notorious for only focusing on it’s own, we want to change that stigma and serve in the community. So, instead of having a soccer ministry in Andover, we want to help the YMCA with their soccer leagues. Instead of putting on our own events, we want to help the Andover Chamber of Commerce do events in the community. Instead of having a support group for alchoholics we want to help AA. The idea is that each and ever Christ follower at Epic Church would find their “+1″ ministry in Andover or Wichita and be the light of the world!

Epic Beliefs:

We believe in one God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 5:16, 45; 6:1, 4, 8, 9; James 1:17; John 1:1; 4:24; 14:9; 14:16 -20; Genesis 1:2; 2 Peter 1:21).

We believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of all things visible and invisible
(Genesis 1:1; Acts 17:24 -28; Hebrews 11:3).

We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s one and only Son, my one and only Savior
(John 1:14; 3:16; 1 John 4:9; 2 Peter 3:18),

Who was born Jesus of Nazareth, both fully human and fully divine, conceived of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary (Matthew 1:18; 21:11; John 1:14; 19:19; Romans 5:15-17;Colossians 2:9; 1 John 1:1; Luke 1:26 -38)

Who suffered and was crucified under Pontius Pilate
(Luke 23:1-46),

Who died and was buried, and Who rose again bodily from the dead on the third day (Luke 23:44 – 24:8; John 20:24-29; 1 Corinthians 15:3-8),

Who ascended into Heaven and now sits at the right hand of the Father
(Luke 22:69; Acts 1:1-9; Colossians 3:1), and Who will return to earth to judge both the living and the dead (Matthew 24:36-42; John 14:1-3; Acts 1:10-11; 10:39-42; 1 Peter 4:5).

We believe in the Holy Spirit, Who is an active and operative part of the triune God(John 16:5 -15; Acts 1:7-8; Romans 8:26 -27), and Who indwells every Christian(1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19; 2 Timothy 1:14).

We believe in the Bible—God’s Holy Word, Scripture. I believe God inspired the autographs (original writings) of the Scripture and those autographs were consequently without error (Mark 12:36; John 14:26; 16:12 -15; Acts 1:16; 1 Corinthians 2:12 -13; 2 Timothy 3:14 -16; 2 Peter 1:20 -21).

We accept the Bible as the final authority for all matters of faith and practice(Isaiah 40:8; Matthew 5:18; 24:35; Romans 15:4; Hebrews 4:12).

We believe the Bible teaches that man, created by God, willfully sinned against God and is consequently lost and without hope apart from Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12; Romans 3:23).

We believe the Bible teaches that salvation—the forgiveness of sins—is only by grace through the blood of Jesus Christ (Matthew 26:28; Romans 5:9; Ephesians 2:8-9; 1 Peter 1:18 -19; 1 John 1:7).

We believe the Bible teaches that one receives God’s grace by putting faith in Christ, repenting of sin, confessing Christ and being immersed into Christ, but that none of these is sufficient in and of itself for the assurance of salvation (Romans 5:1-2; 6:1 -7; Luke 24:45-47; Acts 3:19; 17:30; 2 Peter 3:9; Matthew 10:32; Romans 10:9; Philippians 2:11; 1 John 4:15; Acts 2:38; Galatians 3:27; Colossians 2:12; 1 Peter 3:21).

We believe in the Church of Jesus Christ, founded on the Day of Pentecost and consisting of all Christians everywhere (Matthew 16:13-18; Acts 2:14-47).

We believe the Bible teaches that the Elders are to exercise authority over the local congregation (Acts 20:28; Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4).

Affiliation:

Epic Church is affiliated with the Non-denominational Independent Christian Churches of the Restoration Movement. Below is an excerpt by LeRoy Lawson on the general position of Independent Christian Churches, for more information on the Independent Christian Church, visit Christian Church Today’s website.

Our Position

By LeRoy Lawson

  1. “A Christian church
Our message is that “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.” We require no other creed. He alone is Lord and Savior.
  2. A church of Christ
The church belongs to Him. We have no authority to change the teachings, rewrite the rules, alter membership requirements, or usurp His place. The church is not a democracy.
  3. A church seeking unity
Like the Campbell’s and Stone, members of this church seek to be one in Christ with all others He calls His own.
  4. A church seeking to restore
As much as possible, we imitate the New Testament precedents. That is why our baptism is by immersion, our Communion is every Lord’s Day, our leaders are called elders, our preaching is about Christ, and our prayers are in Christ’s name. Even our church name is rooted in the earliest days, when disciples were called Christians and their congregations were often addressed as “churches of Christ.”
  5. An apostolic church
The church, Ephesians 2:20 states, is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.” Whatever we know about Christ and the church we learned from Jesus’ closest companions, the apostles.
  6. A thinking church
In the same Ephesian letter, Paul prays that God will give a “Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. . . .” Christian faith demands the best our minds can give, so we are a studying church, seeking to apply biblical truth intelligently.
  7. A feeling church
Ours is not a dryly intellectual approach to God, however. We rejoice and praise and pray and love and serve from the heart. We are unashamed of the gospel and not embarrassed to let our excitement be seen.
  8. A sharing church
We share our faith and love with as many as we can reach and our possessions as persons who know that everything we have belongs to God to be used for His purposes.
  9. A free church
We have no bishops or superintendents or national headquarters to determine local church policies. We elect our own leaders, call and support our own ministers, and decide where our mission money will go. We are not isolationists, though. Our congregations freely associate with one another to accomplish tasks too big for one church alone.
  10. A growing church
We want to grow, because we are under Christ’s commission to disciple the world. We haven’t completed the task yet, so Christian churches and churches of Christ are renewing our commitment to go unto the ends of the earth, preaching and baptizing and teaching, until the whole world knows the one Lord of all.”
